There is something very interesting about Allen's The Towering Inferno (1974): it was made by two major studios. Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros. had both bought the rights to skyscraper disaster pictures around the same time and instead of indepenantly producing similar projects, Allen suggested a partnership. While critics have little praise for this feature, it remains a personal favourite of mine -- if only because of the all-star cast. |
Watch for: Fred Astaire, Susan Blakely, Richard Chamberlin, Robert Vaughn, Robert Wagner, and Dabney Coleman. O.J. Simpson's kitten rescue is a treat, too.
This is 1970s 'Hollywood' at its finest, with lukewarm performaces by all. Don't take this high grossing picture ($116m) too seriously and have a great time watching. Winner of the Academy Awards for Cinematography, Editing, and Song (We May Never Love Like This Again). |
