Peach Pit Melodramas used to be narratives performed with the use of musical accompaniment to emphasize and intensify the emotional impact of a given scene. Melodramas are characterized by exaggerated emotions and situations. Unserious treatment of the dramatic. ¶ There is a long tradition in film and television of melodramas, the logical conclusion being daytime dramas, otherwise known as soap operas. ¶ Beverly Hills, 90210, borrows heavily from Happy Days, Archie comics, as well as consciously referencing coming of age films like Rebel Without a Cause and American Graffiti. ¶ Beverly Hills, 90210 ran for ten seasons from 1990 to 2000. In that run there were quite a few good episodes but in general, the show suffered because more often than not it failed to meet its potential. As a result, one tuned in every week in the hopes that this week it would all be worth it. Don't get me wrong. I loved the show and it was my number one guilty pleasure for a good many years. But even with its low-art status in mind, it still could have been much better than it was. The show was at its best from Season three to six. ¶ Are you a former 90210 addict? Send me your thoughts on the show and perhaps I'll post some here. |
